Daycare Trust is launching a new campaign to support parents to save their Sure Start Children’s Centres from local authority budget cuts. Supported by Unison, the campaign includes online guide and resources for parents, as well as a grant application scheme that campaigners can use to help cover campaign costs
Sure Start Children’s Centres across the UK are under increasing threat of closure due to cuts to local authority budgets. Six centres have already closed outright while a further 118 have been merged with other centres and services. However, many further closures have been prevented by centre users who have campaigned to save these vital facilities.

Anand Shukla, acting Chief Executive of Daycare Trust said:
“Sure Start Children’s Centres offer a lifeline to children, parents and families. Local authority budgets are under an incredible amount of pressure because of central government cuts, however Sure Start must be prioritised to keep that lifeline intact.
“Parents and centre users have a key role to play. All the evidence points to the fact that where parents and centre users campaign they can make a real difference, in fact just last week four Sure Start Centres in Liverpool were saved after a fantastic parent led campaign.
“I encourage concerned centre users everywhere to go online, make use of the resources and join our campaign. Together we can Save our Sure Start.”
