A relaxation in the number of pre-school children that nurseries and registered childminders can oversee has been announced in order to professionalise the pre-school workforce and cut the cost of childcare in England.

Earlier this month BBC Panorama highlighted the high cost of childcare and how it risks forcing some parents out of their jobs. The show highlighted new figures from Daycare Trust’s Childcare Costs Survey showing that the cost of childcare had outstripped wage rises over the last year, with the average cost of nursery care in Britain for children under two rose increasing by 6% last year.
Panorama met working mothers in Leicester who are facing high childcare costs at the same time as they try to maintain busy careers at a major NHS Trust, and also visited Norway to meet Daycare Trust Parent Panel members Lisa and Knut, to hear how different it is in other countries.

Report reveals childcare is the luxury that families have to afford as figures show that nursery, childminder and after-school club costs are all rising at more than double the rate of inflation.
The two charities merged on 1 January 2013 and the new charity will be launched in April 2013.
