£12M welcomed for childcare in London

6 August 2009

CONTACT: DAYCARE TRUST PRESS OFFICE, 020 7840 3350, OUT OF HOURS 07736 311 082

Daycare Trust has responded to the announcement of the 10 Boroughs that will participate in the Childcare Affordability Programme in London. Under this scheme families will have their tax credits topped up to pay 100 per cent of the cost of their childcare, and parents will be offered intensive help in getting back to work.

Daycare Trust joint Chief Executive Alison Garnham said:“These pilot schemes will provide invaluable help for 2,000 families in London. It is especially good news one of the pilots will aim to help parents back into work. It’s also good news that the ‘top-up’ to the childcare element of Working Tax Credit can be claimed for children up to 14 years old, as opposed to the previous Childcare Affordability Programme which only covered care for children up to 5 years old.

“However, longer term solutions will be needed to help the poorest families return to work and access affordable high quality childcare. We hope the lessons learned from these pilots can help make that happen.”

Ends.
