Only two per cent of people who currently work in early years are male. Do you think there should be more effort to increase the numbers of men working in childcare and early years?

New funding for disabled children's access to childcare

Daycare Trust welcomes DCSF's recent announcement of £12.5 million funding boost for childcare of disabled children. The additional resources will fund the national roll out of the Disabled Children's Access to Childcare Programme (DCATCH), which will help provide expert advice and support for parents with disabled children when they are choosing childcare for their children.

Daycare Trust has been working closely with Luton Borough Council since 2008, one of the ten national DCATCH pilot programmes. As a result we have developed a wealth of experience and have a true understanding of the needs of providers and parents of children with disabilities.

Daycare Trust and Families United Network have devised a Disability Inclusion Awareness Training session, which aims to assist childcare service providers e.g. breakfast clubs, youth groups, after-school clubs and holiday schemes, to make their settings more inclusive to children with disabilities and their parents. Many of these suggestions do not require additional cost but have a significant impact on how a parent and child are welcomed and included.

"Daycare Trust has been working in partnership with Luton Borough Council since August 2008, to enable our participation in the pilot of the Disabled Children's Access to Childcare (DCatch) pilot. Working with a Daycare Trust consultant, we have been able to establish ourselves as a successful and innovative pilot programme for the DCSF and we have no reservations in recommending Daycare Trust.

Daycare Trust has undertaken a broad range of tasks as part of our partnership work: consultation with parents and professionals/needs analysis; development and implementation of strategy for D-Catch; programme consultancy support; presentations at a regional and national level; establishment of a training programme on disability awareness with local parent-trainers. The range of skills, expertise and organisational support from Daycare Trust has been impressive, reliable and consistent. I thoroughly recommend them."
