Daycare Trust respond to Cambridge Primary Review

The Cambridge Primary Review has recommended that Key Stage one be abolished, and that the Early Years Foundation Stage should be extended to the age of six.

This recommendation has been made in the same week as the publication of the first Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, which has shown improvements in the outcomes of children in the year since the EYFS was introduced.

Daycare Trust joint Chief Executive Emma Knights said:

"The figures published this week by the DCSF show that the Early Years Foundation Stage is making a real difference with over 100 local authorities narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest achieving five year olds. The results show real progress can be made through the EYFS in tackling educational inequality as well as providing the first unified guidance to parents and professionals about what is expected in early years settings - an important role in itself.

"The Cambridge primary Review raises an interesting question; as the EYFS seems to have got the balance right between the happiness and well being of children and the need to reach certain goals it could make sense to continue the Foundation Stage up to age six, but there must still be compulsory attendance, otherwise rather than helping children with the most to gain it would be counter productive.

"Research shows time and time again that early years education provides children with a good start in life and we would not want children of four and five years to miss out on play-based learning."

Ends.
