Daycare Trust win National Lottery funding

Daycare Trust have been awarded the maximum possible grant of £10,000 by Awards for all, a funding stream of the National Lottery Fund who award grants for people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, and projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community.

The grant will fund a pilot project in Sheffield working with refugee parents, promoting the use of high quality childcare and take up of financial benefits. The project will be delivered in co-operation with the Refugee Council and will begin in December this year and conclude in February 2009.

Daycare Trust Joint Chief Executive Emma Knights said:

“Refugee families face the biggest barriers in participating in the suite of support available to parents.

“This project will encourage refugee parents and their children to take an active part in the neighbourhood and wider community in which they live - initially through their engagement with their child's childcare setting. Helping parents feel less isolated, more valued and more confident in their parenting.

“Attending early years education will also provide a good start for refugee children”.

The project will provide five free training sessions; three free outreach sessions for parents with interpreter support and two free training sessions for parent advisors living and working with refugees in Sheffield and the surrounding areas.

Training sessions will include choosing the right childcare for your child, help with childcare costs including tax credit advice and the role of Family Information Services. Supporting written materials will be provided as part of the training.

Daycare Trust is the national childcare charity, campaigning for quality affordable accessible childcare for all and raising the voices of children, parents and carers. We advise parents and carers, providers, employers, trade unions and policymakers on childcare issues. We recognise that everyone is unique and we value difference in our communities. We listen to all views and are committed to act without prejudice. We oppose all discrimination and promote equality in all we do.

Daycare Trust is calling on the government to:

  • Meet parents' aspirations for universal childcare services by:
    • expanding free places for two, three and four-year olds to at least 20 hours a week, for 48 weeks in the year and
    • subsidising out of school activities for all 11-14s and for younger children from poorer families, aiming ultimately to make them free.
  • Tackle the affordability crisis by giving local authorities the means to develop sustainable services in poorer areas and provide free places for those missing out, including places for disabled children, parents needing out of hours care, Further Education students and parents of under-threes who want to train.
  • Use the bar on childcare quality by expanding the Graduate Leader Fund, developing a new generation of childcare professionals and paying them properly.

Daycare Trust is a member of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, www.ecpc.org.uk.
