Entries for this year’s National childcare week children’s competition came pouring in. Our celebrity judging panel, including creator of Fifi and the Flowertots, Bob The Builder and co-creator of Roary the Racing Car, Keith Chapman, Five’s Milkshake! presenter, Naomi Wilkinson and CBBC Newsround Presenter, Sonali Shah plus Tony Anderson, from The Children’s Mutual and Alison Garnham, Chief Executive Daycare Trust viewed all the paintings, drawings and artwork from children aged 2 to 14 telling us what they want to be when they grow up. The children told us they want to be an architect, artists, doctors, police men and women, a soldier, teachers, nurses, firefighters, plus pirates and princesses. Older children sent in pictures and artwork depicting their aspirations for the future.
Keith Chapman commented “This year's 'What I want to be' art competition has been of a particularly high standard. It's great to see so many children showing off their artistic talents revealing their ambitions and dreams for the future. Well done Daycare Trust for encouraging this important initiative.”
Older children were also asked to tell us what they wanted to be and their aspirations for the future.
Preston Townsend was presented overall winner of the competition and was presented with a voucher for his family to enjoy a break at Haven holiday park.

“I am one of the lucky ones! When I was growing up, I wanted to be a cartoonist – I was always drawing and my persistence paid off. If I wasn’t doing this, I think I would want to be an astronaut. Even as a small boy, my imagination would get carried away and I would climb under my parent’s sofa and pretend that I was in a space craft.” Keith Chapman, creator of Bob The Builder, Fifi and the Flowertots and co-creator of Roary the Racing Car |

‘When I was younger I wanted to be either a dancer or a children’s television presenter. I now get to dance A LOT within my presenting job at milkshake! so both of my dreams came true!’ Naomi Wilkinson, Five Milkshake presenter |

When I was younger, I wanted to be so many different things. First, a librarian, because I loved reading and thought it would be really cool to be surrounded by books all day. Then, I wanted to be a professional dancer. After that, I had my heart set on becoming a doctor. Who knew I'd eventually end up becoming TV presenter? Sonali Shah, CBBC Newsround Presenter |
