Daycare Trust welcomes free entitlement extension go-ahead

14 June 2010

Daycare Trust, the national childcare charity has welcomed the government's announcement that the extension of the free entitlement for all three and four year olds to 15 hours a week from September will go ahead as planned.

Education secretary Michael Gove has also confirmed that the government will continue to fund places for 20,000 two-year olds in the most disadvantaged areas, and will look to extend this further when funding allows.

Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of Daycare Trust commented:

"Daycare Trust, along with parents across the country, warmly welcomes the news that from September all three and four year olds will receive the extended free entitlement.  We are also delighted that many two-year olds will also continue to benefit.

Not only does the free entitlement play a vital role in improving child outcomes, it is also a key tool in helping many unemployed parents get back to work, and is exactly the kind of family support that parents really value.

We believe that it has been the most significant and most successful childcare policy in recent years, and we are pleased to see the new government recognise this with their commitment today.

Daycare Trust has campaigned hard to protect the free entitlement, and looks forward to working with the government to guarantee all children the start in life they deserve."

Ends.
