| 8 December 2008 - Daycare Trust's repsonse to the publication today of Unicef Report Card 8: ‘The child care transition’ NEWS RELEASE Embargo 00.01 11/12/08 CONTACT: DAYCARE TRUST PRESS OFFICE, 020 7840 3350, OUT OF HOURS 07736 311 082 Unicef report highlights the need for more funding for childcare Responding to the publication today of Unicef Report Card 8: ‘The child care transition’ Daycare Trust joint Chief Executive Alison Garnham said: "Todays report misses some of the Government's recent progress investing in early years services, but makes the point that if we want children in the UK to benefit from high quality early years education, further investment is needed.“Unicef are right to point out that there has been a sharp increase in the number of mothers in paid employment with a child under the age on one. However, the majority of this is part time work and their children are not spending long hours in childcare. “Research shows that consistency of carer is crucial for children at such a young age, and that’s why the Government, who today publish their Childcare Workforce Report, must invest in funding for childcare, so that settings can afford to provide the pay and conditions and the training that will enable them to retain their staff, providing high quality consistent care for pre-school children”. “As our recent joint report with the TUC: ‘Raising the bar’ showed, the childcare and early years workforce is still characterised by relatively poor pay and conditions with limited opportunities for training and career advancement. “The Government are encouraging parents to return to work so they can maximise their family’s income, but as Unicef point out, this effort cannot succeed without high quality affordable childcare accessible to all parents, otherwise the life-chances of children from poorer families will suffer in the long term."
