    The Childcare Advance project investigated the help currently available to families when faced with up-front childcare costs, the extent to which parents experience difficulty meeting these costs and models potential options for a sustainable scheme offering financial help to parents with these costs.

In particular, it calls for reforms to the Learner Support Fund, the discretionary grant that is the main source of financial help for English student parents who need childcare.

    This research uncovers the postcode lottery and patchwork of childcare availability. The findings of this year's Holiday Childcare Costs survey show a huge gap in childcare provision, with only 20 per cent of local authority Family Information Services (FIS) able to state that they have sufficient holiday childcare in place to meet parental need.
