The quality of childcare matters because it affects the everyday experiences of children and their long-term development. The quality of childcare or differences in children’s experiences in different settings may have developmental consequences, and may explain whether childcare or pre-school experiences are beneficial. As childcare expands in the UK, it is important to ensure that quality services are developed to maximise the benefits to children.
There are substantial problems to overcome before consistently good quality care and education in the early years can be achieved. In particular staff turnover, retention and training issues pose great problems to developing a stable workforce that can really deliver on quality.
